Using Video to Sell More Books

Posted on August 23, 2016 at 1:30 AM

Books may not be considered ‘visual’ content, but that doesn’t mean you can’t or shouldn’t use images to promote them. The most striking way to promote your book visually is to use video, especially on social media. Here are just a few ways that savvy authors can use video to sell more books.

Create a book trailer

Book trailers are great promotional tools. They’re like mini-movies all about your book, and they can be as exciting or entertaining as you want them to be. You can pay someone to make a book trailer for you, or you can make one yourself using video editing software such as Moviemaker. If you use stock images, make sure you follow licensing rules and don’t just use any photo. Copyright free and royalty free images can be found on sites like Pixabay, or you could just take your own photos or video and edit it together with text and an image of your book cover.

Put your book trailer on your author website, YouTube, social media sites, and send it out to book stores and other venues where you’d like to promote your books. It’s a great way to get attention for your book when people are too busy to read the book description.

Stream live videos on social media

Periscope and Meerkat are the types of platform that you can use to your advantage, especially if you are engaging in front of a camera. Read a selection from your book live from an interesting location, stream footage of a book signing that you attend, or just have a Q & A with your fans on the social media sites.

Use videos in your Facebook ads

Video ads can do very well on Facebook, where people often skip long, wordy descriptions but pause to watch thirty-second videos. Keep your video short and make sure people don’t need the sound switched on to understand the premise. Also, make sure you include a link to buy your book in the ad’s text.

Make a video demonstrating a principle/point discussed in your non-fiction book

Non-fiction books are great for telling people how to do something, but you can really drive a point home by making a video to accompany your book. Pick something from the book you’d like to explain in greater detail or that you’d like to demonstrate personally, then make a video about it. The free video is a great advertisement for your book and may help you sell more copies.

Use video book reviews to draw attention to your book

Encourage your readers to create a video book review for you to post on your author site. You could offer free copies of the book in exchange for a fair, honest review. Alternatively, you could review books within the same niche, creating your own review for the other books and include a link to your book in the video’s description. Say something along the lines of ‘If you like this book, you’ll like my book ____.’

Video is a very real and very personal format. Don’t be afraid to connect to your audience via video if you want to grow your following and sell more books.
